A court in Habiganj’s Nabiganj upazila sentenced four accused to death for trying to frame their opponent after killing a woman. Habiganj Additional Sessions Judge AKM Kamal Uddin gave the order on Monday (February 24) afternoon.
The death sentence was given to Al Amin of Madanpur village in Nabiganj upazila, Chadar Ali of Mayanagar, Taj Uddin of Uttampur and Mohiuddin Ahmed alias Sufi Mia, a local expatriate from England.
According to court sources, on December 10, 2014, the hanging body of a woman named Jyotsna Begum was recovered from the boundary wall of the house of former Nabiganj Municipality Commissioner and Jubo League leader Mizanur Rahman. The woman’s house is in Uchail Charinao village of Habiganj Sadar upazila. After this incident, the deceased woman’s brother Rajab Ali filed a murder case against Mizanur and 5 others.
But later, three rounds of police investigation revealed that Sufi Mia, an expatriate from England, had killed Jyotsna in exchange for 5 lakh taka to frame Mizanur and filed a case to frame the Jubo League leader. Later, the CID accused 7 people including Al Amin, Sadar Ali, Taj Uddin and Sufi Mia of being involved in the conspiracy and submitted an investigation report to the court.
Earlier, Sadar Ali and Taj Uddin gave confessional statements to the court.
Then, 11 years after the incident, the court, after taking the testimonies of 28 people, found the four accused guilty under Section 302 of the Penal Code and Section 34 of the Act and ordered the death penalty and a fine of 50,000 taka.
Tapan Singh, bench assistant of the Additional Sessions Judge’s Court, said that all the four accused sentenced to death were absconding at the time of the verdict.
