Pentagon advises employees not to respond to Elon Musk’s emails

The administration of US President Donald Trump recently sent an email to federal government employees. The email sent last Saturday evening asked employees to provide details of the previous week’s work.

The email warned that if they did not respond within 48 hours, they risked losing their jobs. However, at least three US federal government agencies have advised employees not to respond to emails sent by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) headed by Elon Musk.

The Anadolu news agency reported this in a report on Monday.

The news agency said that at least three US federal agencies — the FBI, the State Department and the Pentagon — have instructed employees to ignore an order from Elon Musk, who heads the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) under President Donald Trump’s administration, according to media reports on Sunday.

In a post on social media platform X, Musk reinforced his claim, saying that failure to respond would be considered resignation. He also described the requirement as “consistent with the President’s (Trump’s) directive.”

Musk’s emails have created a chaotic situation in the administration. In that context, the three US government agencies have advised their employees not to respond to Musk’s emails.

Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Director Kash Patel has told his employees to “stop responding in any way.” At the same time, he said that his agency would conduct internal reviews independently.

On the other hand, a US State Department official clarified that no employee is obliged to report their activities outside their department’s chain of command.

The US Defense Department, the Pentagon, has made a similar statement. “The Department of Defense will coordinate responses to the emails you receive from OPM as and when necessary,” senior Pentagon official Darrin Selnick told staff in an email.

The White House has not commented on the controversy, but President Trump has praised Musk’s efforts, saying the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) is “fighting government waste, fraud, and abuse.”
