Elections to be held in December or March next year: Press Secretary

Dhaka //

The 13th National Parliament elections are expected to be held in December this year or at the latest in March next year, said Shafiqul Alam, the press secretary to the chief advisor to the interim government.

He expressed this idea in response to questions from journalists at a news briefing held at the Foreign Service Academy in the capital on Monday.

Responding to questions related to the elections, Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam said, “This (election) has been talked about many times. The chief advisor to the interim government, many advisors have also spoken. The chief advisor had said it twice before. One is that if the political parties want fewer reforms, then the elections will be held in December (this year). And if they want us to stay for a few more days, in that case, he (the chief advisor) said it will be in the first half (of 2026). But here is a real issue: the Kalbaisakhi and stormy season starts from April. After April, the monsoon starts again in June. As a result, those three months are not very suitable for the election. Therefore, we think that the election will be held by December or at the latest by March.’

The Chief Advisor’s Senior Assistant Press Secretary Faiz Ahmed, Assistant Press Secretary Suchismita Tithi were also present at the news briefing.
