A BNP leader was hacked to death by his opponents in Sherpur due to dominance and past enmity. He died on the way from Mymensingh Medical College Hospital to Dhaka Medical College Hospital after 12 midnight on Tuesday.
The deceased Zakaria Badal (47) was the former joint convener of Sadar Upazila BNP and former AGS of Sherpur Government College Students’ Union. Apart from this, two other leaders named Sohag Alam and Ruhul who were with him were hacked to death. Among them, Sohag’s condition is critical.
Police and locals said that Zakaria Badal had a conflict with Union BNP convener Lutfor Rahman over expanding influence in Kamaria Union. This conflict came to light at a BNP meeting a few days ago. After that, the conflict escalated further.
They also said that on Tuesday evening, Zakaria and three others were returning to their home in Sherpur on a motorcycle after exchanging views with the organization’s leaders and activists in Bhimganj Bazar. On the way, Lutfor Rahman’s men attacked them near a local madrasa. They also hacked Zakaria and Ruhul with sharp knives, seriously injuring them. At that time, the people around them came forward due to the screams of the injured, and the miscreants retreated. Later, the injured were admitted to the district hospital. When Zakaria and Sohag’s physical condition deteriorated at night, they were sent to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment. Zakaria Badal died while undergoing treatment there around 12 midnight.
Badal’s relative, Chhatra Dal activist Ramzan Ali, said that the armed men had taken a pre-planned position near Bhimganj Madrasa. After arriving there, they stopped the motorcycle and started beating Zakaria Badal and three others. The murder was committed due to a dispute with Union BNP convener Lutfor Rahman.
Meanwhile, the situation in the area is tense due to the incident. Sherpur Superintendent of Police Aminul Islam said that joint forces have been deployed in the Bhimganj area to maintain order. The police are conducting a 24-hour operation to arrest those involved in the murder.
