Army chief spoke in line with nation’s expectations: Annie

Special Correspondent //

In response to journalists’ questions about the Army Chief’s recent speech and the election, BNP leader Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Annie said, “He spoke very well. He spoke in line with nation’s expectations, and we all want to cooperate with him. Just as we are cooperating with the current interim government, we will all move forward together. Because, they are the fruit of our movement.”

He also said, “We have been fighting and struggling for the national elections for a long time. Because, the last elections were held in the dark of night, in a one-party manner. Sheikh Hasina repeatedly said that the people should have faith in her. But in reality, there has been no acceptable election in the last 15 years. A one-party regime has been established in the country.”

Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Annie said, “To bring stability to the country at present, a democratic government must first be established. In that case, economic stability will return, law and order will not deteriorate, and the rise in commodity prices can be prevented. However, if an election is held where violence and law and order deteriorate, then we need to understand what kind of election we want.”

He also said, “We are all leaders in the field. We have led the movement and struggle in the past. Many of our leaders and activists have been disappeared, murdered, and imprisoned to confront the misrule of fascism. Since August 5, we have been working to strengthen the organization, especially at the grassroots level.”

Regarding the extended meeting of the BNP, he said, “Everyone here has the same statement – first of all, we want justice for fascism, we want justice for Sheikh Hasina. We need to build a specific unity among us. The current deterioration of law and order is part of the conspiracy of fascism.”

Regarding Tarique Rahman’s speech, he said, “He has repeatedly said that we should remain united. We may have differences, but we all have to remain united so that any conspiracy can be confronted. National leader Khaleda Zia, despite being ill, has addressed us from the United States.”

Finally, he said, “To strengthen the foundation of democracy, the first thing we need is a fair election and the establishment of a democratic government. This is the demand of all of us, for which we have been agitating, struggling, and fighting for a long time and are still doing so.”
