Expressing deep concern over the ongoing situation in Bangladesh, Nobel laureate economist Amartya Sen said, “The situation in Bangladesh has saddened me. Dr. Yunus, the chief advisor to the country’s interim government, will have to go a long way to resolve this situation.”

He said this in an interview given to PTI at his ancestral home in Santiniketan recently.

Warning against banning the Awami League as a political party, Amartya Sen said, “Such a move will repeat the same mistake. For which other political parties blamed the Awami League government.”

When asked about his assessment of Dr. Yunus as the chief advisor to Bangladesh, he said, “Dr. Yunus is my old friend. I know that he is very competent and an extraordinary person in many ways. He has made a strong statement about Bangladesh’s secularism and democratic commitment.’

He said, ‘If you suddenly become the head of a country, you too must adopt an effective approach like Dr. Yunus. You must consider different parties. Because, there are Islamic parties, there are Hindu parties too. I have full confidence in Dr. Yunus’s ability.’
