Japan’s northern district of Iwate is burning in a fire. The country has not seen such a large-scale fire in the last three decades.

In a report, the BBC said that the fire started in the northern city of Ofunato last Thursday. The city has also suffered the most damage in the fire. One person has died in the fire.

Disaster management agency officials said that the fire has currently spread across 5,200 acres in Ofunato and more than 2,000 workers have been assigned to fight the fire.

In addition to putting out the fire, rescue workers have also started evacuating people to safer places. About 2,000 people have been evacuated from various affected areas since Thursday. However, about 4,600 people are still trapped in various areas. At least 80 homes in Ofunato have already been destroyed in the fire, the disaster management agency said.

Iwate is Japan’s second largest and one of the most sparsely populated districts. A large part of this district is covered in scrubland and forests.

Japan, a country with an area of 377,975 square kilometers, has 47 districts. Officials from the Central Disaster Management Agency said firefighters from 16 surrounding districts have been brought in to help put out the fire in Iwate, along with 16 helicopters.
