The emergence of Shahbagi leaders and activists cannot be tolerated: Ishraq

Dhaka //

On Thursday afternoon, when leaders and activists of a platform called ‘Bangladesh against rape and oppression’ went to surround the residence of the chief advisor to protest against rape across the country, the police stopped them. At that time, the leaders and activists of the organization attacked the police on the orders of Ganajagaran Mancha leader and former president of the Students’ Union, Lucky Akhter.

After the incident, politicians, student leaders, activists and ordinary students reacted strongly on the social media Facebook.

In addition, protest marches were held on several campuses including DU and RU demanding the arrest of those involved in the attack on the police, including Lucky, within 24 hours.

Meanwhile, Engineer Ishraq Hossain, a member of the BNP’s International Affairs Committee, expressed his position against Shahbagis through a post on Facebook on Wednesday morning.

In that post, Ishraq said, the emergence of some leaders and activists of the infamous Ganajagaran Mancha (Shahbaghi) cannot be tolerated in any way. Through this platform, the foundation for the establishment of the fascist regime for the next 10 years, including judicial killings, brutal torture on the clerical community of Bangladesh, the seizure of power by the murderer Hasina in 2014, and extrajudicial killings to suppress the opposition parties including the BNP, was laid. The interim government has no option but to strictly control them.

Earlier, on Thursday afternoon, an anti-rape march was attacked on the police at the Hotel Intercontinental intersection in the capital. Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) said that at 3:30 pm, a protest group of 60/70 people, including men and women, tried to march towards the Jamuna, the official residence of the Chief Advisor, when the police stopped them at the Hotel Intercontinental intersection.

During this time, the participants of the march tried to break the police barricade using the women as shields and move forward. When the police requested the protesters to move away in the interest of the security of important state installations and maintaining normal traffic flow in the nearby area, they instead attacked the police and started behaving in an arrogant and violent manner.

At this time, several policemen were injured by the nails of the women participating in the protest. At one stage, they engaged in a scuffle with the police and suddenly threw bricks and stones at the police members assigned to maintain law and order and attacked them with sticks. Ramna Zone Assistant Commissioner Abdullah Al Mamun was seriously injured in the attack.

In addition, Ramna Division Deputy Police Commissioner Md. Masud Alam, two female police members and three male constables were injured in the attack by the attackers. Later, the police brought the situation under control by dispersing the protesters.
