The Somali Air Force, in coordination with the country’s National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA), carried out airstrikes in the country’s Lower Shabelle region. At least 82 members of the armed group Al-Shabaab were killed in this.
This information was reported in a report by the Iranian news agency Mehr on Friday.
According to the report, NISA said that a total of 6 airstrikes were carried out in the Sabid and Kanol areas of Lower Shabelle. In this, 19 Al-Shabaab members were seriously injured.
The Somali agency said in a statement, ‘A group known as Khawarij was trying to disrupt security in the Sabid and Kanol areas. The National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) launched this operation to neutralize the members of the armed group after receiving such information.’
It is worth noting that the Somali government calls Al-Shabaab ‘Khawarij’.
The country’s intelligence agency warned citizens to “stay away from the Khawarij bases. Because they are the main targets of the national army.”
Earlier, al-Shabaab attacked Somali soldiers early Thursday. The attack took place in the village of Sabid, which is located on the outskirts of the strategic agricultural town of Afgoye. The joint operation was carried out after that.
The town of Afgoye is located about 30 kilometers (18.6 miles) southwest of the capital Mogadishu.
