Advisor on Women and Children Sharmeen S. Murshid has called for increased global cooperation to accelerate the implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action.

She called for stronger partnerships, increased investments and renewed commitment to ensure that no woman is left behind.

She made the call while delivering a statement representing Bangladesh at the 29th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW69) in New York on Thursday.

This was announced in a press release in Dhaka on Friday.

Sharmeen S. Murshid emphasized the role of women, who have historically been at the forefront of every national struggle for self-emancipation, democracy and social justice.

She said that 65% of the young revolutionaries at the forefront of the July 2024 uprising – against fascism and injustice – were women.

She said that after the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s fascist government, the interim government took on the responsibility of returning the nation to the path of democracy and the gender landscape of Bangladesh changed forever.

The advisor said that we are committed to the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action. The interim government has embarked on a transformative reform agenda to eliminate inequality. For the first time, a ‘Women’s Affairs Reform Commission’ has been formed to address the barriers of gender inequality.

Sharmeen S. Murshid will address a high-level side event titled ‘Investing in Care-A Pathway for Economic Growth and Gender Equality’ jointly organized by Bangladesh, Nepal and Finland, which will be attended by Nepalese ministers, high-level government representatives from Bangladesh, Nepal and Finland, as well as representatives from UN Women, the World Bank and international organizations, civil society, ILO.

She will also hold bilateral meetings with Turkey and Tunisia.

Advisor Sharmeen S. Murshid is on an official visit to New York and Washington, DC, to attend the 69th session of the Commission on the Status of Women from 10 to 21 March 2025 and engage with the World Bank on gender equality, women’s empowerment, investing in social protection, social protection and strengthening multi-partnerships to combat gender-based violence.
