The bodies of four Rohingyas, including a woman, have been recovered from a boat carrying Rohingyas that capsized in the sea off Teknaf, Cox’s Bazar while fleeing from Myanmar and entering Bangladesh. However, several other Rohingyas, including a BGB member, are missing in the incident.

The missing BGB member is said to be a soldier working at the Shahparir Dwip BGB border outpost. The bodies of the Rohingyas who had drifted off the west coast of Shahparir Dwip in Teknaf were recovered at 7 pm today, Saturday (March 22).

Earlier, the BGB rescued 25 people, including women, men and children, in a boat sinking in Teknaf at 2:30 am on Friday (March 20).

Teknaf Upazila Executive Officer Sheikh Ehsan Uddin said, ‘The bodies of four Rohingyas were found floating in the sinking of a boat carrying Rohingyas. Several Rohingyas, including BGB members, are missing in this incident. Our law enforcement agencies are working on their case.’

Locals said they saw a boat carrying Rohingyas fleeing from Myanmar floating in the sea in the Shahparir Island Paschimpara area of Teknaf. Then, BGB members, led by Shaker Majhi, a local resident, gave a signal to stop the boat carrying Rohingyas in a fishing boat belonging to Mohammad Amin. Later, BGB members boarded the boat.

At that time, the boat carrying Rohingyas sank in the rough sea waves. Local fishermen and BGB rescued 25 Rohingyas, including women and children, after hearing their screams. Later, a search was conducted in the sea in search of the missing BGB members and the Rohingyas. The rescued Rohingyas said that there were more than fifty people on the sunken boat.

It is known that Iman Hossain and Abul Mansur, active members of a local human trafficking gang, crossed the Rohingyas from Myanmar.

Teknaf-2 BGB Battalion Commander Lieutenant Colonel Md. Ashikur Rahman said, a Rohingya boat sank in the western part of Shahparir Island in Teknaf while trying to enter Bangladesh illegally by sea. It is initially believed that the accident occurred when the bottom of the boat burst.

He also said, ‘Upon receiving the news of the incident, BGB members went on a rescue operation with the help of local fishermen and were able to rescue 25 people, including children. A BGB member who went on the rescue operation went missing at sea. Although the boat was rescued, none of the missing people could be found. However, bodies are seen floating in the sea. Our rescue operation is underway. The rescued Rohingyas are in the custody of BGB.’
