Bangladesh to import more wheat and fertilizer from Russia: Chief Advisor

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexei O. Verchuk met with Bangladesh’s Chief Advisor Professor Muhammad Yunus on the sidelines of the Boao Forum for Asia conference held in Boao, Hainan Province, China, on Thursday.

The meeting discussed various issues of mutual interest, including the operation of the Rooppur nuclear power plant, plans to import wheat and fertilizer from Russia, and Gazprom’s gas exploration activities in Bangladesh.

Professor Yunus said that the financial issues of the Rooppur power plant have been resolved and Bangladesh is paying Russia through an account in Dhaka. He said that the plant will start generating electricity on a trial basis by the end of this year.

The Chief Advisor said that Bangladesh will import more wheat and fertilizer from Russia. Besides, Bangladesh is interested in Russian energy company Gazprom conducting more offshore and onshore exploration activities in the country.

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk emphasized the importance of increasing mutual contacts between the people of Bangladesh and Russia and said that Russia wants to provide more Bangladeshi students with opportunities to study in their country.

He also said that Russia is interested in exporting more wheat and fertilizer to Bangladesh.

Foreign Affairs Advisor Touhid Hossain, Energy and Transport Advisor Foujul Kabir Khan and Special Representative of the Chief Advisor Dr. Khalilur Rahman were present at the meeting.
