BNP-Awami League clash over ‘Joy Bangla’ slogan after Eid prayers, 2 shot

Tensions flared between BNP and Awami League workers over the ‘Joy Bangla’ slogan after Eid prayers in Lalpur upazila of Natore. Following this incident, Awami League leaders and workers attacked and fired at BNP leaders and workers. Two people were shot. One of them was named Sujat Ali, the other was not identified. Another named Sabbir was injured in the scuffle. It is said that one of the shot victims is a BNP worker. The shot victims have been admitted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.

The incident took place at around 9 am on Monday at the Ramakrishnapur Eidgah in the upazila. Police have detained 9 people in this incident.

Eyewitnesses said that after the Eid prayers, before the sermon, Awami League, Jubo League and Chhatra League workers kept shouting ‘Joy Bangla’ slogans. At that time, BNP and locals protested. There was a commotion at the Eidgah ground. Later, the worshippers there resolved the matter and the prayers ended with prayers after the sermon. Later, Awami League leaders and activists came prepared and attacked and fired on BNP leaders and activists. Sujat Ali and another unidentified person were shot. Another person named Sabbir Hossain (24) was injured. The injured Sabbir was taken to the Lalpur Upazila Health Complex for primary treatment. The two injured have been admitted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.

Lalpur Union BNP organized a protest march and rally in protest of the incident. Former Union BNP President Ashraful Islam Lulu, former General Secretary Rabiul Islam Robi, BNP leader ATM Zahidul Alam Dollar and Zia spoke at the rally. They alleged that the fascist forces are systematically trying to destabilize the country by destroying the peaceful atmosphere of Eid and the administration is playing a silent role, which has raised questions in the public mind.

BNP leaders warned that strict programs will be announced if those involved in the incident are not arrested within 24 hours.

Natore Superintendent of Police (SP) Amjad Hossain said that there was an attack and shooting between Awami League and BNP workers over shouting the slogan “Joy Bangla” at the Eid ground. Two people who were shot in the incident have been sent to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital. Nine people who were involved in the fight have been brought to the police station for questioning. It is being verified whether they were involved in the clash or not.

SP Amjad Hossain also said that additional police, including DB team, police, joint forces, have been deployed at the scene to maintain law and order. There is extreme tension in the area due to the incident.
