Not 50 days, the occupying Israel has made a new proposal for a 40-day ceasefire in Gaza. Through which the Netanyahu government is trying to release 11 living Israeli prisoners and return 16 bodies.
In return, a certain number of Palestinian prisoners will be released from Israeli prisons.
The influential Israeli daily Haaretz reported this information on Monday.
It said that Israel has sent this proposal to the Palestinian independence organization Hamas through the mediation of Egypt and Qatar.
The main conditions of the proposal are:
A 40-day ceasefire;
The release of 11 living prisoners from Hamas and the return of 16 bodies;
The release of a certain number of Palestinian prisoners from Israeli prisons;
Requesting information about the remaining prisoners from Hamas on the 5th day of the ceasefire;
Request for the transfer of 16 bodies on the 10th day.
Reactions from the parties
However, neither Israel, Hamas nor the mediators have yet made any official comment on this report.
Current situation
Netanyahu’s government believes that Hamas still holds 59 Israeli prisoners in Gaza. At least 24 of them are alive.
On the other hand, there are more than 9,500 Palestinian prisoners in Israeli prisons. They are accused of gross human rights violations, torture and medical neglect.
Israel has launched new airstrikes on Gaza since March 18, violating a ceasefire agreement signed in January this year. The attacks, which have been ongoing for the past 15 days, have killed more than 1,000 Palestinians and injured more than 2,500 people.
This brings the total number of Palestinians killed in the Israeli offensive since October 2023, most of them women and children.
International Reaction
The International Criminal Court (ICC) last year issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
Meanwhile, a genocide case against Israel is ongoing at the International Court of Justice (ICJ). Source: Anadolu
