Some big groups and families have laundered money and taken it out of the country: Governor

Chittagong Correspondent //

Bangladesh Bank Governor Ahsan H Mansur said that the banking sector in the country is a big victim of money laundering. Some big groups and families have laundered money and taken it out of the country. The amount is 2.5 to 3 lakh crore taka. In total, about 5 lakh crore taka has been embezzled in the banking sector. Out of this, a big group from Chittagong has laundered about 1.5 lakh crore taka.

The governor presented this information at a press conference organized on ‘Prevention of Money Laundering and Contemporary Banking Issues’ at the conference room of Bangladesh Bank Chittagong on Friday afternoon.

At that time, he told reporters that significant progress will be seen in the next 6 months in bringing back the laundered money. We are trying to seize assets bought with laundered money in several countries. We are working to prevent further theft and laundering of money in the future.

The Governor said, if any specific allegation of involvement in looting is received against any bank official, action will definitely be taken. If an allegation is made against someone without evidence, there is no opportunity to take it into account.

Referring to Chittagong as the largest unit of Bangladesh Bank after Dhaka, the Governor said, we have a big place in Chittagong. Therefore, an initiative has been taken to set up an international standard training center here. Our main responsibility is to bring balance to the overall economy. The stock market and reserves are stable. We have moved to a comfortable place. Exports are increasing. Inflation is now tolerable. I do not think there is any crisis. LNG is being imported regularly to keep power generation normal.

Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) Chief AFM Shahinul Islam, Executive Director Md. Jamal Uddin, Director Md. Anisur Rahman, Director of Chittagong Office Md. Salah Uddin and others were present at the time. Deputy Director Md. Jobair Hossain was present in the presentation.
