A father and son were beaten and hacked to death for not coming to arbitration on charges of theft and drug use in Phulbaria, Mymensingh. The incident took place on Sunday afternoon in Naogaon Dakshinpara village of Naogaon Union of the upazila.

The two deceased are Abdul Gafur (40), a resident of Naogaon Paschim Para village, and his son Mehedi Hasan (15). Police have arrested three people in this incident.

Police and locals said that an arbitration was scheduled to be held against the deceased father and son in the drug-selling and theft case. For this, hundreds of people from the village gathered in front of Gafur’s house in the afternoon. But Gafur and Mehedi were sitting in their houses with ramda in hand instead of going to the arbitration. At that time, when some arbitration people went to the house to call them, Gafur attacked them with a stick. The angry people present hacked and beat Gafur and his son Mehedi to death with sticks. At that time, they vandalized the house, shop and a shrine of a person named Harun Or Rashid in the neighboring village, known as the father-son’s drug dealing den.

Gafur’s wife, Shilpi Akhter, said, “Hundreds of people, including local Habibur Rahman, have systematically hacked and killed my husband and son in the name of arbitration. No matter how many crimes they committed, there is law in the country, they would have been tried through the law. Why did they brutally kill the father and son?”

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Fulbaria Police Station Md. Roknuzzaman said, 3 people have been arrested in this incident. A murder case is under process in this regard.

On the other hand, Mymensingh Police Superintendent Kazi Akhtarul Alam visited the scene in the afternoon after receiving news of the double murder. At that time, he spoke to the victim’s family and locals and assured them of a fair trial.
