The interim government has decided to make some changes in addition to adding new provisions to the Civil Procedure Code (CPC). A provision is being added to the CPC that allows the court to issue summons through telephone, SMS, and other modern methods of communication.
A policy decision in this regard was made at a meeting of the Advisory Council chaired by Chief Advisor Professor Muhammad Yunus at the Chief Advisor’s office in Tejgaon on Thursday.
The Advisory Council took this decision as part of implementing the recommendations of the Judicial Reform Commission.
Later, Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Advisor to the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, attended a press briefing at the Foreign Service Academy in the capital. Chief Advisor’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam was present at the time.
Advisor Rizwana Hasan said that the Judicial Reforms Commission had recommended some changes to the Civil Procedure Code (CPC). In light of that, in-principle approval has been given to make some changes to the CPC, which was formulated during the British government.
She said, “There is a saying in Bangladesh, if you are at enmity with someone, file a land case. Then the case will not be resolved even in three generations. Therefore, some amendments to the CPC have been approved so that it does not take those three generations, but can be resolved in one generation. So that the trial takes less time and costs less money.”
Stating that a new decision has been made regarding repeated time-consuming cases during the trial, Rizwana Hasan said, “Earlier, time was repeatedly taken. Now, the maximum number of times time can be taken will be specified.”
Stating that the judicial work has also been asked to be modernized, the advisor said, “From now on, summons can be issued through telephone, SMS (short message) or other modern methods.”
In addition, the penalty for false cases was previously a fine of 20,000 taka, but now it has been increased to 50,000 taka, said Rizwana Hasan.
