The Shahparan (Rah) Mazar Police Investigation Center in Sylhet Metropolitan City conducted a raid and arrested two smugglers with banned Indian goods worth around 2.5 crore taka. Such a large consignment has never been seized by the Sylhet Metropolitan Police before.
On Friday (April 18), after conducting a raid for about an hour and a half on the ground floor of the Eurocross Building in Khadim Nagar, BSCIC Industrial City, two people were arrested along with the recovery of these Indian goods. A team of Shahparan (Rah) Mazar Police entered the Eurocross Building around 6:30 pm. Later, after receiving news of the incident, DC Sahariar of the South reached the spot. The police completed the raid in his presence.
The arrested are – Sumon Mia (31) son of Gias Uddin of Joykals village of Shantiganj police station in Sunamganj district and Imdadur Rahman (25) son of Abul Kalam of Salekpur village of Zakiganj upazila. Both of them were working as supervisors of Eurocross building.
During the operation, the arrested persons revealed the names of three more absconding people to the police. They are – Md. Saleh Ahmed (28) of Fatepur union of Jaintapur police station in Sylhet district, Helal alias Tere Nam (29) of Daspara area and Eurocross manager Abu Sadat (47) of Feni area.
It is learnt that on Friday, based on secret information, a group of policemen led by SI (retd) Md. Sajib Hossain of Shahparan (Rah) Mazar Police Investigation Center and under the direction of Sylhet Metropolitan Police Commissioner conducted the operation on the ground floor of Eurocross building in BSCIC Industrial City. During this time, 17 bags of Indian sarees and lehengas and 69 bags of various types of cosmetics were recovered. The approximate market value of which is 2,44,97,990 taka (two crore forty-six lakh ninety-seven thousand nine hundred and ninety taka). After seizing the goods and arresting the accused, Shahparan (RA) Police Station registered a regular case under Section 1974 of the Special Powers Act and sent them to court.
The truth of this matter was confirmed to The Daily Morning Sun by IC Md. Sanaul Islam of Shahparan (RA) Mazar Police Investigation Center. He said that no such large consignment has been seized in the Sylhet Metropolitan area in the past few years. At this time, he said that the police are working in the field as per the strict instructions of the Police Commissioner to eradicate crimes including smuggling. The police are vocal in preventing any crime.
