Staff Reporter, Sylhet //

His brother Abdul Bari (60) is desperate to take possession of his sister’s five-storey house in Sylhet. This has alarmed his sister Alma Begum. Finally, finding no other way out, he filed a written complaint with Shahparan (RA) Police Station seeking redress.

According to the complaint, the deceased Safar Ali, father of Islampur in the Majortila area of the city, left behind two sons and three daughters. At the time of his death, he left behind 14 acres of land. Later, with the help of locals, they divided the land. At one stage, Alma Begum’s expatriate husband Abdur Rouf, who lives in London, purchased 6.5 acres of land from his elder brother Abdul Karim and another sister Salma Begum. Alma Begum built a five-storey house on a total of 8.5 acres of land, including 2.5 acres of land. But recently, another brother, Abdul Bari (60), has been demanding a ransom of 20,00,000 (twenty lakhs) taka to evict the wife and children of the London expatriate from that house by killing, abducting and threatening them. He has also been trying to harass innocent people who have been staying at the house at different times. Currently, he and his family members are suffering from extreme insecurity.

The complaint states that on April 25, around 3 pm, an unidentified person along with 2/3 other miscreants stormed Alma Begum’s house. At that time, he and the other terrorists with him demanded a ransom of 20 lakh taka, threatening to leave the house otherwise. At that time, Alma Begum’s other two sisters were present in the house. At one point, when she expressed her inability to pay, the defendant Abdul Bari proceeded to hack her to death with a stick. The entire house was in chaos. At that time, she ran into the house and defended herself. Later, the defendants cut down and indiscriminately destroyed the various fruit trees and seedlings planted inside the house. While leaving, the defendants threatened to kill her and her family members, including disappearing and leaving the house if she did not pay. Currently, Alma Begum and her family members are suffering from extreme insecurity.

It is worth noting that Abdul Bari has long since sold his share property elsewhere and has been living in different places in the Majortila area, expanding his house. He is still childless.

When Alma Begum was contacted on her mobile phone to inquire about this, she said in a tearful voice, “My husband is in London, and on that occasion he is doing these things as my own brother. Everyone in the surrounding area knows about him. Apart from my family members and I, the people of Baratia are also suffering from his pain. Therefore, I am forced to take refuge in the law in the hope of getting justice. She said, today, Sunday, April 27, when the police came for investigation, he abused her in obscene language in front of the police, the police saw it themselves. Even if he dies by consuming poison, I will not be able to tell anyone about that shame, being a Muslim is in danger. Not only that, he also threatened to douse her with petrol and burn her house. She further said that the investigating officer of the case is SI Harish Mia of Shahparan (RA) Police Station. The police themselves saw what they did in front of the police. However, it was not possible to take Harish Mia’s statement as he did not have her mobile number. No statement was received as the official mobile phone of the Officer-in-Charge of Shahparan (RA) Police Station was not received when called.
