Political parties should discuss Myanmar corridor: Mirza Fakhrul

Thakurgaon Correspondent //

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has commented that political parties should have discussed providing humanitarian corridor (human passage) to the civilians of Myanmar.

He made this comment during a public meeting in Sheikh Bazar area of Jagannathpur Union of Thakurgaon Sadar Upazila yesterday, Monday afternoon.

The BNP Secretary General said, there is a war going on in Gaza now. It is not possible to go there. But if the UN wants to send food and medicine there, a road is being built from Jordan or Egypt and sent to Gaza from there. Good thing, there is a need for humanity. What I mean is that today Bangladesh has to reach the point that Bangladesh has to provide a human passage (human corridor). This is a very big decision.

He said, this decision involves our independence, sovereignty and future peace, order and stability of the region. The government should have talked to all political parties about this issue. Instead of doing this, they are taking a unilateral decision and giving human passage (humanitarian corridor).

The BNP Secretary General also said, we have no objection to helping people ethnically. But it must be with the support of all people. We do not want to become another Gaza. We do not want to get involved in war. We are already in trouble with the Rohingya. Again, we do not want any kind of problem to be created by the humanitarian corridor. We think that the corridor should have been given after discussing them.

Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said, for the last 15 years, we did not even get a chance to speak. We could not hold meetings and processions. Our leaders and activists were imprisoned with false cases and tortured. The Awami League government has snatched our right to vote. Now we are agitating to get that right back. If the government really wants to hold elections, it must give a clear roadmap.

He said, the torture that has been inflicted on us in these 15 years is beyond words. Even our brother’s hand has been cut off. Many times our people have had to be imprisoned. The Awami League government has taken away the people’s right to vote and seized power by force.

He also said, we have formed a new interim government together with the students and the public. We have chosen Nobel laureate Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus as the head of that government. We believe that a free, fair and acceptable election will be held under his leadership.

Addressing the crowd, Mirza Fakhrul said, “Have you been able to vote in the last 15 years?” Then the crowd present answered with a ‘no’.

He said, now is the opportunity. Whoever wants to, we should restore the right to vote.

Later in the afternoon, at a meeting in Sheikh Bazar area of Jagannathpur Union, Mirza Fakhrul said, “Now there is no MP, where will the common man go if there is a problem? Therefore, elections and political reforms are needed on an urgent basis.” If the government really wants to hold elections, it must give a clear roadmap. The common people of Thakurgaon have been deprived of development for 15 years. If we are elected, we will ensure jobs, fair wages for farmers and the rights of workers. We will especially focus on employment for the youth.

District BNP General Secretary Mirza Faisal Amin, Vice President Obaidullah Masud, Finance Secretary Shariful Islam, Sadar Upazila BNP President Md. Abdul Hamid, Jagannathpur UP Chairman Mostafizur Rahman Liton, Nargun UP former Chairman Poygam Ali and other leaders and activists of the constituent organizations were present at the event.

Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has started mass communication and organizational activities in his constituency ahead of the 13th National Parliament elections. He came on a three-day organizational tour and held mass communication in Jagannathpur Union of Thakurgaon.

Party sources said that he will hold mass communication in Jamalpur and Chila Rong Unions on Tuesday. He will leave for Dhaka the next day after holding public relations meetings in Debipur and Baragaon unions.
