The death toll has risen to 52 in 11 districts due to ongoing floods in the country. There are 39 men, 6 women and 7 children among them. As of Wednesday, the death toll was 31.
KM Ali Reza, Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief, gave this information in a press briefing on the ongoing flood situation on Thursday.
Out of 52 people, 14 died in Comilla, 17 in Feni, 6 in Chittagong, 1 in Khagrachari, 8 in Noakhali, 1 in Brahmanbaria, 1 in Laxmipur, 3 in Cox’s Bazar and one in Moulvibazar. Additional Secretary said that one person is missing in Moulvibazar.
KM Ali Reza said, according to today’s information received from Sylhet district, the flood situation has improved overall. 68 upazilas were flooded and 492 affected unions or municipalities. A total of 10 lakh 72 thousand 579 families have become watertight in 11 districts. The number of affected people is 54 lakh 80 thousand 463 people.
He said that a total of 3,403 shelters have been opened to provide shelter to water-bound and affected people. A total of 5 lakh 2 thousand 501 people and 36 thousand 448 cattle have been sheltered in the shelters.
A total of 595 medical teams are operational to provide medical care to the victims of 11 districts, said the Additional Secretary.
Stating that the distribution of relief from all levels, including public and private, is continuing in the flood-affected areas, he said that a total of one lakh 4 thousand 100 packets of dry food, clothes and water collected by the coordinators of the anti-discrimination student movement have been sent to the flood-affected areas through the Directorate of Disaster Management. Continuous communication between the Directorate of Disaster Management and the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement continues.
He said that mobile and telephone communication has been restored in the flood-affected districts. All concerned have been asked to take necessary steps to prevent outbreak of water borne diseases after flood.
