The Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) has completed the final step for Samit Som to play for the Bangladesh national team. The Canadian-born midfielder received FIFA’s permission to play for Bangladesh on Tuesday.
Last Monday, BFF applied to the FIFA Players Status Committee for Samit Som’s clearance to play for Bangladesh. A day later, the federation received the approval from FIFA.
BFF Vice President Fahad Karim confirmed the matter and said that they received an email from FIFA yesterday regarding Samit’s playing. There was no complication in getting the clearance as Samit did not play any competitive matches for Canada. Now there is no obstacle for him to play in the Bangladesh jersey.
Earlier, Fahad confirmed the application to FIFA to the media that Samit has submitted all the necessary documents and applied on the FIFA portal. The rest depends on the FIFA Players Status Committee.
After Hamza Chowdhury, who has experience playing in the English Premier League, played for the Bangladesh national team, Canadian expatriate Samit Som also expressed his interest in wearing the red-green jersey. The BFF first sought permission from the Canadian Football Federation to get him. After receiving that permission, his birth registration in Bangladesh was completed. Then the BFF took up the task of getting a Bangladeshi passport. The BFF completed all the procedures for the passport, including biometrics, on Friday.
The federation is moving forward with plans to have Samit Som play in the Asian Cup qualifier against Singapore at home on June 10. If he had to play against Singapore, he would have had to get FIFA approval by June 3. The BFF has also received that. Now it is just waiting for his debut in the red-green.
