Former MP and singer Momtaz Begum from Manikganj-2 constituency has been arrested by the Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Branch (DB) police.
She was arrested from a house behind Star Kabab in Dhanmondi at around 12:15 am on Monday.
DB Joint Commissioner Mohammad Nasirul Islam confirmed the matter to the media.
He said that there are several cases against this former Awami League MP in the capital and Manikganj, including the murder of the anti-discrimination movement. Based on a secret information, she was arrested from a house in Dhanmondi some time before 12 am on Monday. Momtaz has been kept in the DB office.
It is worth noting that popular folk singer Momtaz Begum was an Awami League member of parliament from Manikganj-2 constituency several times. In addition to the murder and attempted murder cases of the anti-discrimination movement, several murder cases have been filed against Momtaz.
On October 23 last year, a murder case was filed against 109 leaders and activists of the Awami League and its affiliates, including Momtaz Begum, Dewan Zahid Ahmed, at Singair Police Station in Manikganj. The case was filed in connection with the killing of four people in police firing during a hartal procession in Singair almost a decade ago. An unknown 500 to 600 other people were named as accused in the case.
Earlier, on October 10, a murder case was filed in court, naming 90 people, including Momtaz Begum and 37 policemen, and accusing 60 unknown people.
