A meeting was held with the participation of judicial officers of Sylhet division at the initiative of Bangladesh Judicial Service Association.

The meeting, organized at the Sylhet Chief Judicial Magistrate Court building on Friday (May 16), discussed the interests and challenges of the judiciary.

The meeting was chaired by Md. Amirul Islam, President of Bangladesh Judicial Service Association and learned judge (District and Sessions Judge) of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal, and was attended by Senior District and Sessions Judge of Sunamganj District Hemayet Uddin as the chief guest.

The speakers highlighted the essential role of the judiciary in establishing law and discussed in detail the existing obstacles such as infrastructural limitations, administrative interference and budget deficit. ‘As the power to appoint, transfer, promote and discipline district court judges rests with the executive branch, the judiciary often faces undue influence, which is contrary to judicial independence. In this context, the speakers demanded that the Supreme Court be entrusted with the responsibility of administrative matters of judges and an independent ‘Judicial Secretariat’ be formed.’
The speakers said, ‘It is possible to increase the effectiveness of the judicial system through structural development of the judiciary and increasing budget allocation. They believe that the association will play an effective role in protecting the interests of judges as a pressure group.’

The judges participating in the meeting called for the modernization of the judiciary and urged the current interim government to take urgent steps to increase the independence and capacity of the judiciary.

Learned judges of various levels from four districts of Sylhet division spontaneously participated in the meeting and expressed their sincere congratulations to the leadership of the association.
