A speech-impaired father committed suicide by poisoning his two speech-impaired daughters by mixing poison with lachrymander. The incident took place in Tulakandi village of Jagatpur union in Titas upazila of Comilla early on Monday.
Although his daughters Monira (8) and Sanju Al Fateha (5) died of poisoning, the father, Manu Mia, survived. He is currently undergoing treatment at a private hospital. The children’s mother, Hasina Begum, was in the kitchen at the time of the incident.
Locals claim that the father, Manu Mia, attempted suicide with his two daughters due to the family’s poverty and deprivation.
Family and local sources say that Manu Mia, a speech-impaired son of Mokbul Hossain of Tulakandi village of Satani union of the upazila, is also speech-impaired. His two daughters are also speech-impaired. Several people in the same family were disabled and Manu Mia was unable to work for a long time and was living in poverty. He was depressed due to his physical condition and poverty.
Upazila Health Officer Md. Sarfaraz Hossain Khan said, Manu Mia and her two daughters were brought to the hospital around 8 am. Monira and Fatiha died before they were brought to the health complex. The father was referred to Comilla Medical College for advanced treatment. We have handed over the bodies of the two to the police.
Titas Police Station OC Md. Shahid Ullah said, the speech-impaired father tried to commit suicide by poisoning his two speech-impaired daughters. This incident could have happened due to speech impairment, poverty and family despair. We have brought the bodies of the two deceased daughters to the police station, their bodies will be sent to Comilla Medical College for autopsy.
