Multi-faceted plan adopted for Payra Port: Shipping Advisor

Kuakata (Patuakhali) Correspondent //

Shipping Advisor M Shakhawat Hossain said that a multi-faceted plan has been adopted for Payra Port. The government wants to develop the port as a ‘green port’. Later, the new government will take forward the activities of this port.

The advisor said these things at a workshop held on the master plan for the development activities of Payra Port. The workshop was held at a hotel in Kuakata, Patuakhali on Sunday.

Green port refers to a port that invests and encourages environmentally friendly and sustainable activities.

At the workshop, M Shakhawat Hossain said, we are telling the private sector and foreigners to be interested in investing. If a rail line comes to Payra Port, this port will be more effective. Even a container terminal in Barisal can yield good results.

Although there are plans to build two more terminals at Payra Port through neighboring countries, it is not happening for now, the shipping advisor said. He said, “Maybe this terminal can be built later.” M Shakhawat Hossain also spoke about the initiative to build an international-standard deep-sea port in Matarbari, conduct dredging activities at Payra Port, and import reconditioned vehicles using Mongla Port.

Rear Admiral Masud Iqbal, Chairman of Payra Port Authority, delivered a welcome speech at the workshop. He expressed his determination to conduct operational activities of the first terminal at Payra Port from July 2026. He said that a team of experts from BUET and the Netherlands consulting firm Haskoning have worked for several years to prepare a master plan for Payra Port.

Haskoning’s team leader Menno Muijs presented the main paper on the master plan project. He said that long-term thinking has been taken about Payra Port. Payra Port has more potential than Mongla Port in western Bangladesh. This port will also have greater economic prosperity.
