Permission was granted after ensuring that Bangladesh’s interests are not harmed: Foreign Affairs Advisor

Diplomatic Correspondent //

Foreign Affairs Advisor Md. Touhid Hossain said that the UN Human Rights Country Office will not go against Bangladesh’s interests, but will be in their favor. He said this at a briefing for journalists at the Foreign Ministry on Thursday evening.

The Foreign Affairs Advisor said that Bangladesh allowed the office to open in its own interests. This is not the case, we signed the agreement after their proposal. Bangladesh took a long time. Permission was granted after ensuring that Bangladesh’s interests are not harmed.

When asked about the construction of dams on Chinese rivers, Touhid Hossain said, the sources of the rivers flowing through Bangladesh are not within the country. We cannot prevent infrastructure construction in the upper reaches of these rivers. We have to ensure that we do not suffer any harm as a result of these infrastructures. And if it does, that too should be very limited.

He said, the Chinese ambassador said – they are not generating hydroelectricity by building a dam on the Brahmaputra River. They have come up with a new method. China will use the water flow in several stages. They have assured that there is no project to withdraw water in it. Therefore, we have no reason to be upset. Bangladesh has said that it will be considered whether experts exchange information on water flow. That does not mean that they will not build this dam. We will try to ensure that Bangladesh is not harmed. India also has interests here, they are also looking into the matter.

Asked whether Dhaka has sought medical assistance from any country besides Singapore, India and China in the Milestone School incident – the Foreign Affairs Advisor said, every country has wanted to provide us with assistance. No one else has offered any other proposal, and there is no need for cooperation. The cooperation we have received in the case of burns is sufficient.

Asked about the cooling of the two countries during the visit of the Indian medical team, he said, Bangladesh wants good relations with India by protecting the respect of both sides. We are looking positively at the arrival of Indian expert doctors.

Asked why Dhaka made an undisclosed agreement with the US, he said, “The question should be asked to those who negotiated it. The negotiations are not over, it would not be right for me to say anything in the middle.”

Is the Foreign Ministry in the dark about these negotiations? In response, Touhid Hossain said, “Not in the dark, you should rather wait for a few days.”
