The second round of nuclear talks between Iran and three European countries—Britain, France, and Germany—has been held in Istanbul.
The meeting, held at the Iranian embassy in Istanbul on Friday, lasted more than three hours and was held completely behind closed doors.
Deputy Foreign Ministers Majid Takht-Ravanchi and Kazem Gharibabadi participated in the talks on behalf of Iran. Iran agreed to sit in on the talks again at the request of the European parties that signed the 2015 nuclear deal.
Earlier, the first round of deputy foreign minister-level talks was held in the same place on May 16. At that time, both sides agreed to hold separate talks with European countries in addition to the ongoing indirect dialogue between the United States and Iran.
However, these talks suffered a major setback after the recent Israeli attack on Iran on June 13. The incident also halted the US-Iran indirect dialogue and broader talks with European parties.
However, observers believe that Friday’s meeting is an attempt to return to the negotiating table and keep the diplomatic path open. Neither side immediately made an official statement to the media after the talks, but diplomatic sources say that more meetings are possible in the future.
Tensions have long existed between Iran and Western countries over its nuclear program. The situation became more complicated after the United States, led by then-President Donald Trump, unilaterally withdrew from the deal in 2018.
