President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has emphasized the need for the speedy resolution of outstanding issues between Bangladesh and India through dialogue to further strengthen and sustain the existing relationship between the two nations.

He made these remarks on Tuesday morning at Bangabhaban during a courtesy call by the Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Dinesh Trivedi.

The President’s Press Secretary, Md. Sarwar Alam, briefed reporters on the meeting.

The President stated that resolving issues of mutual interest in a fair and mutually acceptable manner would further enhance trust and confidence among the peoples of both countries.

Noting that the management of shared river waters is directly linked to the lives and livelihoods of the people in both nations, the President urged India to take effective measures for the equitable sharing of waters from common rivers, including the Ganges and the Teesta.

High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi informed the President that his government is taking positive steps in this regard.

The President remarked that Bangladesh attaches special importance to its relationship with India as its closest neighbor and a key partner in trade and development.

He stated that Bangladesh is keen to build a dignified, forward-looking, and mutually respectful and beneficial partnership with India, while upholding sovereign equality, national interests and dignity, and the welfare of the people.

During the meeting, the Indian High Commissioner extended sincere congratulations, respect, and best wishes to Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on assuming the office of the President.

Highlighting the great importance India attaches to its relationship with Bangladesh, High Commissioner Trivedi reiterated his country’s commitment to further expanding cooperation across various sectors, including bilateral ties.

He stated that his country is strongly interested in further strengthening and enhancing the relationship based on mutual dignity, trust, and cooperation.

The President thanked the High Commissioner for his congratulations and requested him to convey sincere gratitude and best wishes to the President of India.

The President noted that there is immense potential to further expand cooperation in various fields, including trade, water resource management, technology, connectivity, culture, and people-to-people ties. He added that India and Bangladesh could work even more closely to achieve shared peace, development, and prosperity by harnessing the capabilities and potential of their peoples. The Indian High Commissioner expressed hope that the two countries would continue to work together and sought the President’s cooperation in discharging his duties.

The President wished him a successful tenure and expressed the hope that the relationship between the two nations would become even more fruitful, positive, and oriented towards public welfare.

Senior officials from the President’s Office, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Indian High Commission were present during the meeting.
