Governor Ahsan H Mansoor said that Bangladesh Bank is looking after the interests of depositors of troubled banks. He said, the government is with the depositors of these banks. To improve the condition of the banks, changes have been made in their boards.
After the meeting of Bangladesh Bank with the Managing Director (MD) of various banks today, the Governor gave this information to the journalists. At this time, he advised the depositors to be patient.
The governor told journalists that large amounts of money have been laundered from the banking sector in various ways. Basically, this money has come out from seven-eight banks. As a result, these banks are in liquidity crisis. However, the central bank will not print money and give these to banks. Two lakh crore rupees should be printed in it. Inflation, the value of the dollar—everything will go up.
Ahsan H. Mansoor said, ‘We are trying to give money in limited form to banks facing liquidity crisis. These banks will receive money as deposits from other banks. Bangladesh Bank will give guarantee in this case.’ He further said that although there are problems in seven-eight banks, there is no problem in the entire banking process. Normal operations are going on. The depositors of troubled banks will be protected.
The Governor of Bangladesh Bank said, “We knew about the banks that are in trouble now. Even the depositors knew it. Many have kept money in these banks in the hope of more profit. As a result, they got the opportunity to embezzle more money from these banks. Those who have deposited money will have to be patient for some time.
The governor said that changes have been made in the board of directors of several banks. Management will also change. These banks will be audited. After that, the future of the banks will be decided. A decision will also be taken whether these banks will be restructured and run alone, or merged with someone. If the bank is small, it can also lead to retirement. He said, ‘Half of the Islamic Bank’s money is gone. It will take 1-2 years to repair these banks.
Ahsan H Mansoor said about the money smuggled out of the country, “We have taken the initiative to identify the big debtors and seize their assets in the country. Efforts are underway to recover the money laundered. Discussions have been held with the World Bank, United Kingdom, and the United States for this. Further discussion will follow. We have requested them to refund the money and provide technical support. Besides, I am asking for seizure of the money that has been smuggled in different countries.
The governor said that in the UK alone, information about 500-600 houses of one person has been found. Many others have such resources. The major destinations of money laundered from Bangladesh are the United Kingdom, Dubai, Singapore and the United States. Trying to get these money back, let’s see what happens.
