The Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Branch (DB) police have arrested Jamaat leader and former BNP MP Major (Retd.) Akhtaruzzaman. He was arrested from the Cantonment area on Friday afternoon.

Akhtar Hossain, Deputy Commissioner of the Media and Public Relations Division of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police, confirmed the matter.

Earlier on Friday, a case was filed at the Airport Police Station by security officer Md. Shahriar Alam Sajib, alleging that the former MP had threatened the Executive Director (ED) of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport and assaulted a security supervisor.

On the same afternoon, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Albiruni Mir accepted the case statement upon its submission to the court. Abu Bakkar Siddique, Sub-Inspector (SI) of the Prosecution Division, stated that the court ordered SI Majedul Islam of the Airport Police Station to submit a report by November 10.

The case statement alleges that around 10:40 AM yesterday (Thursday), a massive rush of passengers occurred after a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight (BG-338) from Medina landed at the airport. A shortage of trolleys arose near luggage belt number 8, causing delays for passengers in retrieving their luggage and creating a tense situation. Amidst the passengers’ anger and agitation, the airport’s Executive Director, Group Captain SM Ragib Samad, arrived at the scene at the request of Mohammad Kamal Hossain, the MP for the Dhaka-5 constituency. While he was attempting to calm the situation, Major (Retd.) Akhtaruzzaman approached him aggressively and hurled abusive language. Akhtaruzzaman threatened the Executive Director, saying, “I will beat you up” and “I will throw you out by the scruff of your neck.” He also made indecent remarks regarding the Minister of Civil Aviation and Tourism. The FIR further states that the protocol assistants accompanying Akhtaruzzaman were recording videos on their mobile phones within the airport’s restricted (KPI) area. Warrant Officer Mohammad Kamal Uddin, the security supervisor on duty, asked them to stop filming. Enraged by this, Akhtaruzzaman verbally abused him using foul language and, at one point, physically assaulted him.

Additionally, allegations have been raised that he caused damage by knocking bottles of Zamzam water—collected by ordinary passengers—off a trolley and behaved aggressively toward a representative of Biman Bangladesh Airlines.

The plaintiff noted in the FIR that the accused’s actions obstructed government officials from performing their duties in the sensitive and restricted airport zone. Furthermore, these actions created a risk of disrupting the airport’s normal order and security.
