Ukraine has asked for permission to use long-range missiles provided by Western allies to attack targets inside Russia.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky asked for this permission at a meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group (UDCG) at Ramstein Air Base in Germany on Friday.
Zelensky said his country needed this permission to put pressure on Russia to end the war.
“We need long-range capabilities,” the Ukrainian president said. (With these missiles) should be able to attack not only the divided territory of Ukraine, but also the Russian territory. So that Russia is encouraged to negotiate peace.
US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin announced another $250 million in military aid to Ukraine at the UDCG meeting. He said, our support will help to meet Ukraine’s growing needs and increase capacity.
According to BBC, British Defense Minister John Healy announced the sending of 650 short-range missiles or Lightweight Multirole Missiles (LAM) to Ukraine at the meeting. With these missiles it is possible to hit a target 6 km away.
The UDCG was established after the Russian invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022. The group is made up of about 50 countries that have provided arms to Ukraine. The group has already held several meetings. This is the first time that Zelensky participated in the meeting of this group.
Zelensky attended a meeting of Germany’s UDCG at a time when 55 people were killed in the Ukrainian city of Poltava in a Russian attack. 300 people were injured.
The West has already given long-range missiles to Ukraine since the start of the war. But it did not allow to attack the Russian territory. In this situation, it is not possible to say for sure how effective this request of Zelensky will be.
