The newly appointed Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Tribunal, Mohammad Tajul Islam, said that Sheikh Hasina is the main accused in most of the cases filed on charges of genocide. He will be brought back to the country to face trial in the tribunal.
He said this in response to questions from reporters at the International Criminal Tribunal on Sunday (September 8). Prosecutor of the tribunal Gazi MH Tamim and others were present at the time.
Tajul Islam said, ‘Bangladesh has a criminal exchange agreement with India. In the light of that agreement, the process of bringing back Sheikh Hasina will be started. Initiatives will be taken by the prosecution to ensure that the other accused in the genocide case cannot escape outside the country.
He said, “Preserving the evidence of genocide before it is destroyed is a big challenge. We appeal to the people of the country, before the evidence is destroyed, you should submit the evidence of genocide and torture to the prosecution of the tribunal or to the investigation agency.
The chief prosecutor said, “No matter how influential the accused including Sheikh Hasina are, everyone will be treated equally.” As no one will be oppressed, no one will be exempted.
Earlier, on Saturday (September 7) night, the Ministry of Law announced the appointment of Mohammad Tajul Islam as a prosecutor. The notification also said that Advocate Tajul Islam will enjoy the status of Attorney General.
Meanwhile, Tajul Islam has resigned from my Bangladesh Party (AB Party) after being appointed as the Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Tribunal.
