After Nazmul Hossain expressed his desire to step down from the leadership of the three editions of the Bangladesh team, Tawhid Hridoy’s name is being heard as the possible captain of the T20 team. However, the BCB has announced the team for the ODI series against Afghanistan in Sharjah with Nazmul as the captain. Some cricketers of the Bangladesh team are leaving for the United Arab Emirates today to play the three-match ODI series, while the rest will leave tomorrow.
Before leaving for the airport today, Hridoy spoke to reporters in front of the Academy building of the Sher-e-Bangla Stadium in Mirpur. When asked about the T20 captaincy there, he said, ‘The BCB will decide on this. I have nothing in my hands. I think it will not be done by just me or one or two people. The BCB or those in charge will know better. I think that for the good of the team, the captaincy should go to whoever it is. And I wish him all the best.’
When asked whether he is ready to take on the captaincy, his answer was, ‘I don’t want to talk about it now. Since we have a game ahead, I want to focus on that.’
The Bangladesh team is returning to ODI cricket after eight months with the Afghanistan series. With this series, the team will enter the atmosphere of the ICC Champions Trophy starting in Pakistan in February. Since the format is an ODI, Hridoy is optimistic about doing well as a team, ‘I hope we can start well. We have always played well in this format. This time too, we definitely want to start well. If we can play to our potential, something good will happen, Insha Allah.’
When asked about the recent performance of the Bangladesh team in the other two formats, Hridoy said, ‘Every cricketer here is very professional. I think there is nothing to think too much about the past. “It’s better to move on from match to match. Maybe it’s a match or a big tournament. I hope we don’t have time to think about what we’ve done or what we’ve done recently. Personally, I think how we start the day is important for us. I want to be in the present.”
