Bangladesh’s journey in the Asian Games came to an end following a goalless draw against Myanmar. Despite creating scoring opportunities, the ‘Red and Green’ team failed to capitalize on them, ultimately leaving the field with just a single point. The Group F match took place in Japan on Monday (September 21).
Last year, Bangladesh qualified for the Asia Cup for the first time after defeating Myanmar on their home turf. However, facing the same opponent a year and a half later, Bangladesh failed to find the back of the net.
In the current edition of the Asia Cup, Bangladesh had lost their first two matches—10-0 against North Korea and 6-0 against South Korea. Consequently, they aimed to bounce back in the final group stage match against Myanmar. Myanmar was in a similar position, having lost their previous two matches 5-0 to South Korea and 8-0 to North Korea.
Myanmar held a slight edge in terms of attacking play during the first half. In the 27th minute, a powerful shot from Myanmar threatened to result in a goal, but Bangladesh goalkeeper Rupna Chakma denied the attempt. Alongside Rupna, the defensive efforts of Shiuli Azim and Shamsunnahar (Senior) played a crucial role in thwarting Myanmar’s attacks.
Bangladesh attempted to create chances by deploying Rituporna Chakma, Monika Chakma, and Tohura Khatun in the attack. Meanwhile, Myanmar’s offensive strategy largely revolved around Win Theingi Tun. Myanmar tried to exploit the flanks to create openings in the Bangladeshi defense, while Bangladesh sought to move the ball forward quickly whenever the opportunity arose.
The match dynamics did not change significantly after the break. Myanmar continued to launch more attacks. Although the Bangladeshi defense was repeatedly tested, Myanmar failed to score thanks to the steadfast performance of goalkeeper Rupna Chakma.
In the 68th minute, Bangladesh’s Moumita was involved in a foul. In the 81st minute, Myanmar launched an attack on the Bangladeshi goal; although a scoring opportunity arose, a Bangladeshi defender intervened in time to thwart it, denying Myanmar another potential goal.
Bangladesh also earned a corner kick in the 84th minute of the match. Bangladesh failed to capitalize on the opportunity for a goal from the corner kick taken by captain Maria Manda.
In the 86th minute, Myanmar created another scoring opportunity but failed to convert the attack. The very next minute—the 87th—Bangladesh conceded a foul, resulting in a free-kick for Myanmar; however, they were unable to find the back of the net with the ensuing shot.
In the 91st minute, a Myanmar striker launched a brilliant attack. Although the attempt—made from close range—posed a threat to Bangladesh, goalkeeper Rupna Chakma once again stood firm. Her superb save denied Myanmar the goal, allowing Bangladesh to maintain a clean sheet.
Despite dominating the match in terms of attacks and shots, Myanmar could not breach the Bangladeshi defense or beat goalkeeper Rupna Chakma. Bangladesh, too, failed to generate any significant attacking threat. Consequently, the match between Bangladesh and Myanmar ended in a goalless draw after 90 minutes plus stoppage time.
