The bank accounts of former Minister of State for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid Bipu and former Joint Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police Biplab Kumar Sarkar and their wives and children have been seized. At the same time, the bank account transactions of their owned businesses have also been suspended.
On Tuesday, Bangladesh Bank’s financial intelligence unit Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) sent instructions to all banks and financial institutions in the country to freeze the accounts.
All transactions through personal and business accounts held in the names of persons whose accounts have been frozen will be suspended. For the next 30 days, no transactions can be made as such. If necessary, this period of suspending the transaction will be extended.
BFIU’s letter said that relevant provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Rules will apply to this order to suspend transactions.
In the letter, the names and national identity cards of Nasrul Hamid, his wife Seema Hamid, son Zaref Hamid and daughter Alifa Hamid and former joint commissioner of police Biplab Kumar Sarkar and his wife and children have been given.
