Indian artist Pratul Mukherjee, known for his song ‘Ami Banglaay Gaan Gai, Ami Banglar Gaan Gai’, has passed away. He was 83 years old.

Pratul died while undergoing treatment at SSKM Hospital in Kolkata on Saturday morning, West Bengal news outlet ‘Sambad Pratidin’ reported.

The artist had been admitted to the hospital since the first week of January. During this, Pratul Mukherjee underwent a surgery. After that, he also suffered a heart attack and was also infected with pneumonia.

After losing consciousness, he was taken to the hospital’s ITU on February 11. This artist, who used to sing and talk about people, could not be revived from there.

Pratul Mukherjee had been ill since last year. There were reports that he had been admitted to the hospital a month ago.

Among the many songs of this artist, two songs titled ‘Charlie Chaplin’ and ‘Dinga Bhasao Alu Becho’ are among them. When 14,000 farmers were given back their land in Singur in 2016 in the presence of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, the song ‘Ami Banglaay Gaan Gai’ was heard in Pratul’s voice.

In addition, an album of Pratul was released by the Bengal Foundation in Bangladesh in March 2011. The album is called ‘Ami Banglaay Gaan Gai’. Pratul became more popular with the audience in Bangladesh with this song.

Pratul Mukherjee was born in 1942 in Barisal, Bangladesh. His father was a school teacher. After the partition of 1947, Pratul moved to Upper Bengal with his parents; then they started living in Chunchura.

He started going to school in 1952. He showed his acting skills on the school stage. Pratul made his debut as a ‘singer-actor’ on the stage of a school play.

He wrote his first song in 1962. Before that, he used to compose music for poems by various poets. Then he composed several mass songs for a decade. He was known among the Naxalites as ‘Sejda Comrade’.

Pratul, who started his career as a banker, released his first solo album ‘Jete Hobe’ in 1994.

Pratul did playback in the movie ‘Gonsaibaganer Bhoot’. His albums include ‘Pathre Pathre Nache Agun’, ‘Jete Hobe’, ‘Otho Hey’, ‘Kuttus Kattus’, ‘Swapner Feriwala’, ‘Tomake Dekechim’, ‘Swaponpure’, ‘Anoek Notun Bandhu Hok’, ‘Hazbaral’, ‘Dui Kanur Upakhyan’, ‘Andhar Name’.
