It has been reported that two brothers were seriously injured in an attack by opponents over distribution of Shinni in Nadampur village of Uttar Khurma union of Chhatak upazila of Sunamganj district. This has led to intense tension between both sides.
The injured are Zakir Hossain (25) and Billal Hossain (37), sons of Azizur Rahman of the same village.
The incident took place on February 3 at around 9:30 pm in front of the house of Azizur Rahman of Nadampur village of Uttar Khurma union of the upazila. The two injured were first taken to Chhatak Upazila Health Complex, but the doctor on duty there referred them to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital as their condition was critical. Currently, the two of them are fighting for their lives in ward no. 27 of Osmani Hospital.
It is learnt that while distributing Shinni to the Muslims at the village Jama Masjid after the Shab-e-Barat night prayers, Sufian Mia (35), son of Tofazzal Mia, had an argument with Billal Hossain, son of Azizur Rahman. Later, the Muslims present resolved the matter. But before the issue could be resolved, to settle the previous grievances, 1) Hamza Mia (35), son of deceased Mofazzul Ali, 2) Mizan Mia (30), son of deceased Mofazzul Ali, 3) Matiur Rahman (40), son of Matiur Rahman, 4) Naeem Ahmed (20) and Habib Mia (21), son of deceased Hushmat Ali, all gathered in a crowd and attacked Zakir and Billal Hossain with local weapons, iron rods and bamboo sticks, etc. The miscreants left their two brothers with serious injuries and buried them in the ground on the spot. While fleeing, Matiur Rahman snatched away Tk 5,300 in cash. They also threatened to kill and even disappear if they filed a case against them. At one point, the locals came forward after hearing the screams of the injured and the miscreants fled. Later, the locals rescued the two brothers with serious injuries and admitted them to the Chhatak Upazila Health Complex. But when their condition deteriorated, the doctor on duty there sent them to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital. They are currently undergoing treatment.
When the victims’ father, Azizur Rahman, was contacted on the phone to inquire about this, he said that his two sons were crying in bed. At that time, he said in a tearful voice, “I will seek justice through the law and I hope the administration will be able to bring those involved in the incident to justice.”
When contacted on the mobile phone, the investigation OC of Chhatak Police Station said that no written complaint has been received yet. However, if the complaint is found to be true, legal action will be taken subject to investigation. Meanwhile, a source concerned has confirmed that the process of filing the complaint is underway.
