After strangling his girlfriend to death—using a *lungi* wrapped around her neck and a pillow pressed against her face—the boyfriend hid the body under a cot. When his mother discovered the body the following day, the two conspired to dispose of it. As the body would not fit into a suitcase, they severed it in two at the waist using a *boti* (curved vegetable cutter), a cleaver, and a blade. Subsequently, one part was packed into a suitcase and the other into a plastic sack, and both were dumped into a canal.
The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) uncovered these details while investigating the recovery of a woman’s severed body—found in a suitcase and a plastic sack—from a canal beside the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway in Joydebpur, Gazipur. The PBI stated that the woman, Dolly Akter (30), was murdered by her boyfriend, Mission Islam (22), following disputes over their romantic relationship, marriage, and past issues. Mission Islam, his mother Banu Akter (43), and his friend Mizanur Rahman Milton (24) have been arrested in connection with the incident. Authorities recovered the *boti*, cleaver, remnants of adhesive tape, Dolly’s National ID card, mobile phone, and shoes from them.
Md. Rakibul Akter, Superintendent of Police, disclosed this information during a press conference at the Gazipur PBI office on Monday morning.
The PBI stated that the deceased, Dolly, was the daughter of Badsha Miah from Paharpabijan village under Muktagacha Police Station in Mymensingh. Following a divorce from her husband, she worked at a factory in the Baniarchala area of Gazipur, where she also lived in a rented home.
Last Friday afternoon, locals spotted a suitcase and a plastic sack in a canal beside the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway in Joydebpur. Police subsequently recovered the severed body of a woman from them. The victim’s elder brother, Sohel, filed a case at Joydebpur Police Station regarding the incident. The PBI later initiated a parallel investigation to identify the victim and unravel the mystery behind the murder. At one stage of the investigation, aided by information technology, Mizanur Rahman Milton, Mission Islam, and Banu Akter were arrested on Saturday night from separate rented homes in the Bahadurpur Tulsibhita area of the metropolis.
Mostafizur Rahman Ansari, an inspector with the Gazipur PBI, stated that a romantic relationship had developed between Dolly and Mission as they worked in the same factory. Following this relationship, Dolly visited Mission’s rented home on the night of September 8. There, Mission, his mother Banu, and Dolly had dinner together. Later, Mission and Dolly went to sleep in the same room, while Banu went to the adjacent room.
Subsequently, an argument and dispute arose between Mission and Dolly regarding marriage and past issues. At one point, Mission decided to kill Dolly. According to the PBI, after administering sleeping pills and allergy medication, Mission strangled Dolly to death around 2:00 AM by wrapping a *lungi* around her neck and pressing a pillow over her face. He then hid the body under the bed.
The PBI reported that the next morning, while cleaning the room, Banu discovered Dolly’s body under the bed. Mother and son then conspired to dispose of the body. Although they purchased a suitcase from the market, they could not fit the body inside it. Later, using a *boti* (curved vegetable cutter), a *da* (cleaver), and a blade, they severed the body in two at the waist. One part was placed in the suitcase, while the other was wrapped in polythene, put into a plastic sack, and dumped into the canal near the Bhabanipur Bridge area.
Superintendent of Police Md. Rakibul Akter stated that identifying the victim was initially difficult due to the decomposition of the body. Her identity was later established through crime scene analysis, information technology, and intelligence gathering. He added that the three arrested individuals confessed to the murder and gave confessional statements in court on Monday.
