A court has sentenced two individuals to death in a high-profile rape and murder case in Nabiganj, Habiganj. Additionally, each has been fined Tk 20,000. Judge Syeda Minhaz Um Munira of the Habiganj Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-3 delivered the verdict yesterday, Sunday, at 3:30 PM.

The convicted individuals are Khalil Uddin (30), son of Mirash Uddin, and Golam Hossain (35), son of Ishad Ullah; both are from Harinagar village in Nabiganj Upazila. Public Prosecutor (PP) Advocate Kamal Uddin Salim confirmed the matter.

According to court sources, on the night of December 26, 2021, around 11:00 PM, the accused raped and subsequently murdered a woman from their village. They later dumped her body—with hands and feet bound—in a paddy field beside a road in Nabiganj Upazila. Upon receiving the information, the police recovered the body and sent it to the morgue at Habiganj 250-Bed Modern District Sadar Hospital for an autopsy.

The day after the incident, the victim’s father filed a murder case at Nabiganj Police Station, naming Khalil Uddin and Golam Hossain as the accused. Following an extensive investigation, the police submitted a charge sheet against the two. Yesterday, after recording the testimonies of 14 prosecution witnesses, the judge delivered the verdict in the presence of the accused.

Public Prosecutor Advocate Kamal Uddin Salim stated, “We are satisfied with the court’s verdict. We demand the speedy execution of the sentence.”
