Bangladesh’s wait continues. Despite playing well against Singapore, Bangladesh failed to find the back of the net. Hamza, Jamal, and their teammates suffered a 1-0 defeat at Jakarta’s Gelora Bung Karno Stadium, courtesy of a first-half goal by Ryan Stewart. This marks Bangladesh’s second consecutive loss in the ASEAN Cup.

After a 3-0 defeat against Malaysia in their opening match, Bangladesh faced the same fate against Singapore. However, the ‘Red and Green’ team played much more organized football compared to the previous match. Bangladesh attempted to attack right from the start, earning a corner in the second minute. In the 15th minute, Rakib Hossain entered the box with the ball, but no clear goal-scoring opportunity materialized.

Singapore broke through Bangladesh’s defense to score in the 35th minute; Ryan Stewart headed a cross from the right flank into the net. Two minutes later, the hosts had a chance to double their lead, but a shot from the right struck the crossbar and rebounded back into play.

In the second half, Bangladesh grew increasingly desperate to equalize. In the 47th minute, goalkeeper Mehdi Hasan saved the team by brilliantly tipping a Singaporean shot over the crossbar. Subsequently, Bangladesh gradually increased the pace of their attacks.

In the 57th minute, coach Thomas Dooley substituted Minhajul Karim in for Sheikh Morsalin, marking Minhajul’s national team debut. Later, in the 71st minute, Sohel Rana replaced Shamit Som, and Fahamidul Islam came on for Shukti Itofusa.

Immediately after coming on, Fahamidul injected pace down the left flank. In the 79th minute, Rakib Hossain connected with a header from Fahamidul’s cross, but the Singaporean goalkeeper denied the attempt. Towards the end, Hamza Chowdhury even pushed forward from the defense in search of a goal, but Bangladesh failed to breach Singapore’s solid defense to find the elusive equalizer. Ultimately, the ‘Red and Green’ representatives had to leave the field with a 1-0 defeat. Having failed to secure any points from two matches, Bangladesh sits at the bottom of the points table.

Malaysia holds the top spot with 3 points from one match, while Indonesia and Singapore occupy the second and third positions, respectively, with 3 points each. Hamza, Jamal, and their teammates are set to face Indonesia in their final match of the tournament on October 1. Today’s loss has made it difficult for Bangladesh to qualify for the third-place play-off; if the match between Indonesia and Malaysia—scheduled for 6:30 PM today—ends in a draw, Bangladesh will be eliminated.
