Brother-in-law Slit to Death Over Refusal to Vacate House; Sister and Brother-in-Law Arrested

Dhaka //

A man named Mohammad Fakhrul Hasan Farhad (44) was killed by having his throat slit following a dispute over his refusal to vacate a house in the capital’s Shahjahanpur area. The incident occurred yesterday, Wednesday evening, in the Amtala area of Shahjahanpur. Police have arrested Farhad’s elder sister, Noor Afsana Nipa (45), and brother-in-law, Abdus Samad Sujan (58), in connection with the murder. Authorities subsequently recovered the *chapati* (cleaver) used in the killing, a red helmet, and the clothing worn during the incident.

Mohammad Harun-or-Rashid, Deputy Commissioner (DC) of the Motijheel Division, disclosed these details at a press conference held at the DMP Media Center this Thursday afternoon. He stated that Fakhrul was killed by having his throat slit inside a residence in North Shahjahanpur sometime between 6:30 PM and 9:30 PM on Wednesday. His wife discovered the body upon returning home that night. Police arrived at the scene after being notified and subsequently identified a man wearing a red helmet through an analysis of CCTV footage. The victim’s brother-in-law, Abdus Samad Sujan, was arrested from an office on Topkhana Road on suspicion of involvement in the murder; the red helmet, the cleaver used in the crime, and the clothing worn at the time were recovered from his possession. The victim’s elder sister, Noor Afsana Nipa, was also arrested for her involvement in the incident.

Police investigations revealed that the house had originally belonged to the victim’s maternal grandfather and was later divided between his two sisters. Facing financial hardship, the victim, Fakhrul, had sold two of his own flats in Khilgaon and was living on the fifth floor of the house in question with his wife. However, he had ongoing disputes with his elder sister and brother-in-law regarding various issues, including the payment of gas and water bills. He was frequently pressured and threatened to vacate the premises. A heated argument regarding the matter had occurred as recently as last August, but Farhad had maintained that he would not leave the house until the day he died. The body was taken to the Dhaka Medical College morgue for an autopsy on Thursday. Following the procedure, the body was handed over to the family. The deceased’s sister, Nargis, stated that there are two sisters and one brother in the family. The land on which the four-story building in Shahjahanpur stands is registered in the names of the two sisters. A long-standing dispute had existed between Afsana and her husband, Sujan, regarding this property, as well as gas and water bills; their aim was to take full possession of the building.

She further explained that since the rooftop section of the fourth floor was registered in her name, she had allowed her brother to live there. Farhad resided with his wife—a beauty parlor worker—in a tin-shed room on the roof. Last Wednesday night, Sujan entered Farhad’s room armed with a *chapat* (a type of heavy cleaver) and launched a brutal attack, hacking him indiscriminately across various parts of his body. Farhad died at the scene.

A case has been filed at Shahjahanpur Police Station in connection with the incident, naming Abdus Samad Sujan and Noor Afsana Nipa as the accused. Upon their production in court, a three-day remand was granted. Police are attempting to uncover the details of the murder plot and the specific roles played by the sister and brother-in-law through interrogation during this remand. Authorities stated that if any other individuals were involved—either directly or indirectly—they would be identified through the investigation and face legal action.
