Jahanara Akhter is a resident of Ghardair village of Kakailcheo union of Ajmiriganj upazila of Habiganj district. A few days ago, she came to the upazila headquarters to seek health care during pregnancy. But in Ajmiriganj Kakailcheo, he came under the influence of breakdown and bad condition in various places of the road and instead he fell ill.
Jahanara Akhter told The Daily Morning Sun reporter, “The condition of our road is very shameful. When we go from home to the market, our condition worsens. A healthy person, where he gets sick, how is he going during pregnancy?’
Several thousand people of at least 15 villages of the union are suffering due to numerous breakdowns and potholes in various parts of the 7 km Ajmiriganj-Kakaicheo road. People of different classes and professions who come to the upazila headquarters every day for medical services, education, jobs, etc. are now in trouble. The risk of life of ordinary people is constantly increasing due to accidents on broken roads along with the additional rental expenses of traders in the transportation of goods.
Locals say that during the flood of 2022, the road from Bhati Samipur of the municipality to Kalnipara village of Kakailcheo Union will be damaged.
At some places there are very large cracks. After the flood waters receded, the renovation works were tendered, but the renovations were completed with nominal substandard work. A month or two ago, when the road broke again due to flood, the road became unusable after the water receded. EasyBike, CNG and other motorists took their own initiative to repair several broken parts of the road for temporary traffic with their own pocket money and labor. Now everyone has to walk on this broken road.
Meanwhile, according to the sources of Local Government Engineering Directorate (LGED), 32 kilometers of roads in Ajmiriganj upazila have been damaged due to sudden floods this year.
In this regard, Ajmiriganj Upazila Local Government Engineering Directorate (LGED) engineer Ahmed Tanzir Ullah Siddiqui told Morningsun, “We have already sent a written proposal to the higher authorities to repair a total of 32 kilometers of roads in the upazila, including the Ajmiriganj-Kakailcheo road. If the proposal is accepted, we hope to start the repair work very soon by inviting tenders.
