Nahid Islam, coordinator of the anti-discrimination student movement and advisor to the Information Technology Ministry of the Interim Government, said that former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina wants to be brought back to the country and made to stand trial for all the murders that happened during her tenure. He said this in an interview given to Reuters on Friday.
Nahid Islam said, we want to know why she (Sheikh Hasina) fled the country. We want to see justice for all the murders that have been committed during the government under his leadership. This is one of the most important demands of our recent revolution. If he does not return to Bangladesh, we will take strict action.
He further said, we want to see her (Sheikh Hasina) arrested. We would like to see his trial in a regular court or a special tribunal. We are in discussion about this.
Nahid told Reuters about the National Assembly elections, electoral and constitutional reforms are necessary before any election in Bangladesh. Hence, it is not clear when the next election will be held.
He said that the main priority of the interim government is to organize a fair election. Because the opposition parties boycotted the previous election. Apart from that, he also mentioned about the corruption trial of the previous government.
Regarding India, Nahid Islam said that India has developed relations with Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League, but not with the people of Bangladesh. He said, we want friendly relations with India. India also needs to look at its foreign policy. Otherwise it will become a problem for the entire South Asia.
When asked whether he wants to become the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Nahid said, “What I will do next will depend on the people of Bangladesh.”
