The newly appointed Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), Sheikh Md. Sajjat Ali, has announced that if a case is not taken at any police station in Dhaka, that OC (officer-in-charge) will be suspended (dismissed) within a minute.
He gave this warning at a meeting with auto-rickshaw, auto-van and easy-bike drivers at the DMP headquarters on Monday (November 25).
At the meeting, a rickshaw driver claimed that he was beaten up in the Kamrangirchar area on Sunday and the day before.
In the wake of such allegations, DMP Commissioner Sheikh Md. Sajjat Ali said, why didn’t you file a case? If the case is caseable, the OC must take the case. If the case is not taken, the OC of that police station will be suspended within a minute.
Regarding extortion, the DMP Commissioner said that there will be no extortion in rickshaws and vans. No one can take the hard-earned money of the poor. Local local gangsters share the extortion money. If a police officer is involved in extortion, then he has no protection. If someone takes the hard-earned money of the poor, action will be taken.
Informing about the formation of a committee to stop extortion, he said that the rickshaw pullers will form a committee with the OC of the police station. The committee will work to stop extortion.
Earlier, around 11 am, two rickshaw pullers’ organizations met with the DMP Commissioner at the DMP headquarters. In the meeting, the rickshaw pullers presented their various demands.
They claimed that auto-rickshaws have to take the main road due to their stomachs. They are not even allowed to enter the lanes of some areas. Therefore, we are forced to take the main road. We would have benefited if you cooperated with us.
