The police there have arrested four leaders of Sylhet Awami League and Jubo League. The arrested have been in political asylum in Shillong, Meghalaya state, India since August 5. It is learnt that they have been arrested for changing their location without informing the police. They are scheduled to be produced before a Shillong court on Tuesday (December 10).
The arrested are – Sylhet District Awami League General Secretary Advocate Nasir Uddin Khan, Metropolitan Jubo League President Alam Khan Mukti, Vice President Abdul Latif Ripon and Metropolitan Awami League member Elias Hossain Jewel.
Sources said that after the fall of the Awami League government on August 5, several hundred leaders and activists of Sylhet Awami League and its affiliates fled to India.
They took refuge in Shillong, the capital of the Indian state of Meghalaya, neighboring Sylhet. Some of these political leaders also sought political asylum in India.
Sources further said that the four arrested leaders were not allowed to go out of Shillong without informing the police. But they broke the law and took shelter in Kolkata. The Shillong police did not find out their location and reported it to the higher authorities.
Sources further said that a rape incident took place in the building in Kolkata where the arrested leaders took shelter a few months ago. When the police raided the building, they arrested the four leaders who were staying illegally along with a UP chairman. The police later released the UP chairman as they had valid residence documents. The arrested are scheduled to be produced before a Shillong court on Tuesday.
