A Bangladeshi worker named Md. Rajab Ali (50) has died after falling into a rock hole while trying to smuggle coal into India through the Tahirpur Upazila border in Sunamganj.

His relatives confirmed that he died on the other side of the Lakma border in the upazila on Wednesday (February 12) afternoon. The deceased Rajab Ali is a resident of Lakma Paschimpara, bordering Sreepur Uttar Union in the upazila.

Rajab’s relatives said that Rajab Ali and some other workers went to collect coal inside India on Wednesday morning, avoiding the eyes of the BGB. The coal mine is about one kilometer away from the Tahirpur border. Rajab got trapped in the mine hole while working.

Kartik Das, Deputy Assistant Inspector of Tekerghat Police Outpost, said that he heard that Rajab Ali died after being hit on the head by a rock while trying to illegally import coal from India. A post-mortem report was prepared on the body of the deceased Rajab Ali at his home in the evening and sent to Sunamganj District Sadar Hospital for autopsy.

Lt. Col. AKM Zakaria Qadir, commander of the 28th Battalion of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in Sunamganj, said that despite strict surveillance in the border area, a worker died while working in a coal mine inside India by eluding the patrols in the early hours of the morning. We are investigating his case.
