BNP’s candidate for the paddy sheaf symbol in Sylhet-1 (Metropolitan and Sadar) constituency and advisor to the party chairman, Khandaker Abdul Muktadir, has received widespread public support.
He started his campaign from Akhalia Ghat in the city at 10:30 am on Sunday (January 25). Later, he visited various areas including Tapoban and Surma residential areas, Lake City, Nayabazar, Mount Edora. At that time, a large crowd of ordinary people was seen along with party leaders and activists. Local residents spontaneously supported the paddy sheaf symbol. Many exchanged greetings with the candidate and expressed their hope for development, good governance and establishment of justice in the area.
During the public relations meeting, Khandaker Abdul Muktadir said that cultivation is being hampered in many areas of Sylhet due to the lack of proper drainage system. He mentioned that if effective drainage system is worked through proper planning including digging canals, it is possible to produce an additional 8 lakh tons of crops in the district.
He said that martyred President Ziaur Rahman took the initiative to dig canals, we will also maintain that continuity. Necessary initiatives will be taken to ensure more production from every agricultural land in Sylhet.
He also said that there was a famine in the country in 1974, when the population was about 80 million. Although the population has now reached about 200 million, there has been no famine due to the increase in agricultural production. However, noting that Sylhet is lagging behind in this trend of progress, he said that planned work will be done to overcome this deficit.

Earlier, Khandaker Abdul Muktadir inaugurated the Sadar Upazila election office in Sonatala in the suburbs at 10 am on Sunday. Sadar Upazila BNP President Abul Kashem, former Hatkhola Union Chairman Azir Uddin, Sadar Upazila BNP General Secretary Azizur Rahman, Vice President Rafiqul Islam, Joint General Secretary Zahed Ahmed, Organizing Secretary Akbar Ali, Sadar Jubo Dal President Abul Hasnat and other leaders spoke at the inaugural ceremony.
Meanwhile, Ward BNP President Tajul Islam Taj presided over the courtyard meeting organized by Ward No. 33 BNP of the metropolis at 10:30 pm on Saturday. Khandaker Abdul Muktadir spoke at the meeting held under the direction of General Secretary Abdul Haque Jabed. Metropolitan BNP General Secretary Emdad Hossain Chowdhury, former General Secretary Badruzzaman Selim, District BNP Advisor Ahmedur Rahman Milu, Vice President and former UP Chairman Mazharul Islam Dalim, Joint General Secretary Siddiqur Rahman Paplu and other leaders were present.
Earlier, at 9:30 pm, the courtyard meeting of BNP in Wards 3 and 4 of Khadimpara turned into a public meeting. The meeting, chaired by Union BNP President and Union Parishad Chairman Badrul Islam Azad and jointly moderated by Jubo Dal leaders Saleh Ahmed and Tarek Ahmed, was addressed by Badruzzaman Selim and Mazharul Islam Dalim, along with other leaders.
