Improving law and order situation and fighting corruption will be the main priority, said BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman. He said, “First of all, we have to ensure one thing, that is improving law and order situation. That is, everyone should be safe. And corruption – we have to deal with it in any way. There are different types of corruption at different levels. We have to try to deal with it in different ways. If we can solve these two issues properly, then many other problems of the country will be solved. That is my plan.”
He presented this plan while interacting with the winners of the ‘National Reel-Making Competition’ titled ‘Amra Bhabna Bangladesh’ at Justice Shahabuddin Ahmed Park in Gulshan, the capital, on Saturday (January 24) afternoon. Tarique Rahman was accompanied by his daughter Barrister Zaima Rahman. The winners posed their various questions to Tarique Rahman at the event, and he answered them openly.
The meeting was organized in the open space of the park. Tarique Rahman spoke to 10 winners of the national reel-making. Questions like who will get the family card, will the women who have lost their husbands get the family card also come up. In response, the BNP chairman said, single mother brides, those who are in various problems, have left their husbands, look, if you see, I think 138 projects have been launched under this social safety of the Bangladesh Government. But these are not right. Your resources are being wasted. One is getting three supports, another is not getting one. We want to organize this thing a little through the family card. We have kept it for universality. For example, he said, for example, a farmer’s wife will also get it, a van driver’s wife, he will also get it, another official, his wife will also get it.
In response to another question, he said, education should be made easy. So that children are interested. We want to organize the education system. We will not only include academic studies, but also sports in education. Sports will also have to pass. Art and Culture will be included. Then, internet browsing can be prevented and separate teams will be formed with the concerned ministries.
In response to a question, Tarique Rahman said, not only infrastructure construction, but also teachers need to be qualified. Children need to be given proper education. Social values should be taught from an early age. BNP has a separate plan for children.
He said, ‘Our youth are going abroad in an unskilled state. So many times they do not get proper evaluation. We have planned to make them skilled. If expatriates send remittances through the right channels, we can provide incentives for them.’
If the media does not talk about various forms of online harassment, no one talks about it, then can there be a remedy? In response to such a question, Tarique Rahman said, ‘Now, there are cyber bullying, acid attacks; if we teach children from an early age – this is wrong, this is right, this is black, this is white. If we can teach children in this way, I think a child will reach a stage. Then this thing will enter their heads that some are right and some are wrong, some are right and some are wrong. When they grow up, they will slowly start applying social values.’
When someone asked what can be done when children become addicted to mobile phones and see negative things, Tarique Rahman said, ‘There is work to be done here. During my father’s (Ziaur Rahman) time, there was a program called Notun Kudi. This, of course, has been reintroduced by the current interim government. We have a plan for sports. We want to link sports with Notun Kudi. If children are involved in sports, mental development will occur. In addition, sports, third language, recitation, art, music, art and culture will be added to the syllabus at the school level. As a result, school children will be busy in these areas. The inclination towards the internet will decrease.’
Barrister Jaima Rahman expressed her thoughts on online harassment and said, ‘If I can say one more thing, it means that harassment that happens online – girls and boys are all harassed. In this case, a digital education system can be created.’
Jaima Rahman also said, ‘We should understand – how is the system hacking and reporting done? The reporting system may need to be hacked, if a community desk can be created, if something happens in the area, then the people of the area can manage the matter there. In this way, things can be fixed locally. Moreover, if children can be taught from an early age what is right and what is wrong; then these problems will decrease. Everything has to be done together.’
After listening to the girl’s thoughts, Tarique Rahman said, for example, we are thinking of introducing one thing, but we have not included it in the plan. That is – if it is primary, then it will be in class six, and secondary, it will be in class seven. Three or four friends will form a team. They will raise either a cow or a goat or a duck, a chicken, a cat, a dog, a bird – whatever it is, and what their experience is with it, how they raised it, this will be an exam. Can this thing be introduced or not? – Tarique Rahman asked the winners present.Tarique Rahman also knows that BNP is also thinking about whether Facebook’s office can be brought to Bangladesh.
In response to a question regarding the resolution of traffic congestion in Dhaka, Tarique Rahman said, “Do you have any idea how many people are in Dhaka city now? I heard that it is 30 million plus people. There are several reasons for this traffic jam. First, our road designing, secondly, our public transport management, public transport system and thirdly, there are several facilities. Among the facilities, there is education, there is health, there is security, there is job security. All these have been developed more or less in the center of Dhaka.”
He said, there are also small towns in the districts. There are district towns or there are headquarters towns. We will develop small satellite towns there. We will not take new places. Where the city is already there. We will build the thing in this place. The basic supports will be there. Basic support will include good schools, education, medical facilities, grocery markets, and efforts will be made to ensure security.
Referring to a conversation with a traffic expert, he said, “Now I am looking at flyovers or metrorails. Metrorails are relatively expensive and take up more space. In this case, monorails are a good idea. There are monorails in many places, including Malaysia, China, and Japan. The advantage of monorails is that they have small carriages and can be connected to the metro at all places in Dhaka. Monorails will reduce costs and improve traffic management. As easy as I said, it is not as easy as it seems. It will take time, it is a difficult task. But it is not impossible. If we try, it will definitely happen.”
The 10 winners of the ‘National Reel-Making Competition’ are – Taufiqur Rahman, Rafayetul Ahmed Rabit, Sheikh Rifat Mahmud, Fatima Ayat, Md. Israfil, Shazedur Rahman, Sheikh Md. Iqratul Islam, Zarin Nazneen, Md. Rifat Hasan and Ramesa Anjum Roshmi. They spoke to the BNP Chairman and shared their questions and thoughts.
