India is keen to maintain normal relations with Dhaka, despite certain complications—such as differences of opinion regarding the whereabouts of ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the postponement of a potential visit by current Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.

In this context, New Delhi is prioritizing the preservation of good relations between the ordinary citizens of both nations, setting aside political tensions.

Although Tarique Rahman has postponed his scheduled visit to India, discussions between the two sides remain ongoing. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had invited him for a bilateral visit and to attend the BRICS summit, but he deferred the trip.

However, Indian High Commissioner to Dhaka, Dinesh Trivedi, has stated that while politics follows its own course, priority is being given to the hopes and aspirations of the people of both countries. The High Commissioner recently met with Adviser Zahed Ur Rahman and Water Resources Minister Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Annie in Dhaka. The current Bangladesh administration has also expressed a positive attitude toward further advancing relations with India based on trade, commerce, and mutual respect.

Meanwhile, the sharing of waters from common rivers remains a crucial issue in the relationship between the two countries. The historic 1996 Ganges Water Sharing Treaty is set to expire this coming December. Bangladesh has clearly stated that the renewal of this treaty will be a key driving force for the future of bilateral relations.
